We are looking for a full-time Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to join either our Saskatoon, Regina, or Calgary team! This position will report to the Instrumentation & Controls Discipline Lead. We have multiple opportunities across Canada. Indigenous applicants are encouraged to apply.

As a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer, you will serve as a technical authority in the design, specification, integration, and commissioning of complex instrumentation and control systems. You will provide advanced engineering expertise across all project phases, from concept development through detailed design and field implementation.

This role requires strong engineering judgment, deep knowledge of industrial control systems, and the ability to navigate complex technical challenges. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, guide junior engineers and designers through technical mentorship, and ensure that all I&C solutions meet regulatory, safety, and performance requirements. As a senior specialist, you will influence project direction, contribute to standards development, and drive continuous improvement within the discipline.

Position Overview
 
Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and review of I&C engineering deliverables including P&IDs, instrument loop diagrams, location drawings, and interlock diagrams.
  • Design and review fire alarm and detection systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Prepare and validate instrument datasheets, control narratives, alarm lists, design criteria, and engineering specifications.
  • Select, size, and evaluate instruments for flow, level, pressure, temperature, and chemical composition measurement and control.
  • Provide technical leadership during vendor evaluations, design reviews, and equipment selection.
  • Interpret manufacturer manuals, circuit diagrams, and blueprints to determine suitability, testing requirements, and maintenance procedures.
  • Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance testing of instrumentation and control systems, including site visits as required.
  • Integrate control and measurement instruments into new and existing plant equipment and processes.
  • Provide engineering input for proposals, cost estimates, and project planning.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and knowledge transfer.

Technical Competencies
 
  • Advanced P&ID development and interpretation
  • Control narrative/control philosophy development
  • Instrument selection, I/O lists, instrument index, and datasheet development
  • Specifications and design criteria preparation
  • PLC/HMI/DCS/SCADA hardware design (component selection, cabinet layouts)
  • PLC/DCS/HMI programming, configuration, and troubleshooting
  • Schematics, loop drawings, and wiring diagram development
  • Industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, OPC)
  • Control system network design (switching, fiber optics, copper cabling)
  • Hazardous/classified area instrumentation design
  • SIS/SIL analysis and application
  • Proficiency with CAD and I&C tools (SmartPlant, AVEVA Instrumentation)
  • Continuous improvement and innovation, including identifying best practices and tools to increase efficiency

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a focus on Instrumentation, Electrical, or Controls Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration.
  • Extensive experience in instrumentation and controls engineering, preferably in mining or heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience with AutoCAD® or similar design tools is considered an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality engineering deliverables.
  • Comfortable working in industrial environments for field verification, data collection, and site meetings.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a cross-functional team environment.

Compensation: Commensurate with education and experience.
